I am an established maker running a ceramics workshop in West Dorset. I produce handmade ceramic products which include tiles presented as multiples in framed collections, buttons and coasters. Framed work ranges from a single tile to a collection of over a 100 small circular tiles.
The tiles are produced using a porcelain clay decorated with a white glaze. Images from my drawings are then applied in the form of a platinum and coloured transfer decoration. The drawings I create are in direct response to the found objects I collect from the West Dorset coastline as well as botanical illustrations and drawings I make in natural history collections and museums. My work explores fragments and partial imagery reflecting the incomplete fossils and fragments I collect on the beach.
Transfer decoration is a clean and practical way of marrying the handmade with small batch production enabling me to experiment with scale, composition and presentation. These techniques allow me to draw upon my training as both a ceramicist and a museum professional.
The combination of porcelain and platinum creates a unique and contemporary art work suitable for a range of interiors. I regularly participate in design led trade and public art fairs as well as selling through select outlets and exhibitions nationally. By working in partnership with interior designers I am increasingly working to commission for specific spaces. Recent projects include collections for the National Trust as well as a number of private commissions for kitchen and bathroom settings.
