After completing a two-year Art and Design course at Lowestoft College, I then went on to gain a degree in 3/D design at The University of Creative Arts in Farnham, specialising in Ceramics.
The work is made from porcelain and fired to a high temperature.
I use this material for its translucency and strength.
I enjoy using porcelain clay and the challenges it presents. It is a wonderful material to work with as it picks up fine textures and shows off the glazes vibrantly.
I love smoothing and shaping the clay, seeing a fish emerge, each with their own character and uniqueness.
I produce my own glazes, mixing these together to achieve a rich and varied texture, using wax resist, I scratch into the surface adding several layers to increase the depth.
I love the excitement when opening a kiln, not knowing how the materials will react with one another or what other effects/colours will come through.
I have been motivated to make different fish/sea creatures from living near the sea and studying the local history of the fishing industry, this has been a great inspiration to me.
