Following a career in arable farming, spanning nearly 15 years and hurling fast into his fourth decade of life: he produces this Mole-like face (as in wind in the willows), threw down his New-Holland key-fob and left! He had no idea what he wanted to do, but his liking for DIY, especially timber elements and wanting to do something more individual and creative, possibly working for himself guided John to the probability of designing and making furniture.
He went on to spend a year in Glasgow obtaining an NC in Furniture Construction, which then gained him access to study the intricacies of designing and making furniture at degree level. After 3 years spent in High Wycombe (once home to the likes of Ercol and Parker Knoll) he graduated from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College during the summer of 2002 with a BA (hons) in Furniture Design & Craftsmanship.
John P Johnston-Furniture was set up in October 2002, firstly under the umbrella of a collective organization in the Scottish Borders. After a short spell spent back in the Chilterns helping set-up a similar collective, John returned home to East Lothian in 2005 and gleefully went about establishing his own workshop.
During the nearly 13 years of running his business, John has worked with many individual clients on there highly personal commissions, as well as collaborating with Architectural firms, Construction companies and Interior designers. This has lead to a wider variety of working with wood and being creative in different discourses. Be it a hardwood staircase, a front door, a kitchen, built-in units, too stand alone furniture.
His inspiration comes in many ways, from the Arts & Crafts movement, the timber itself, too philosophies of artists and makers whom work predominately in timber. Generally those driven by a vision and whom frequently challenge the accepted order of things. Subsequently over the years his love of DIY has exasperated somewhat!
