I am inspired by “wild and wide open landscapes” and my many layered paintings and prints begin on location where I make observational drawings and paintings and take photographs. I use a variety of mixed media – a combination of painting, collage and printmaking methods to reach a conclusion. Textures and mark making are important in the work which is demonstrated by the building up of layers – sometimes imprinting marks or scraping through the surface to expose lower layers. This physical approach mimics human and natural interventions imposed upon the land, and mirrors the layers of history and time which shape and form our landscape. I find that this method of working is more interesting and challenging for me as an Artist as this very free way of making means I need to respond to what is happening on the canvas – this keeps the work fresh and unpredictable which produces exciting results.
I strive to produce a piece of work which is uninhibited and allow the work to emerge through the material layers to convey a sense of place.
The Scottish coast line and upland hills , where I live , are the driving force of my painting process and a constant source of inspiration.
